Over the last ten years I’ve noticed that my stress related reactions, anger or anxiety affect me less and less. I put a lot of effort and commitment into changing the way I think and perceive the world around me, attending counselling and hypnotherapy sessions, interpersonal workshops and reading developmental books. I became more aware of how my mindset affects what is happening in my life. And I eventually came to the conclusion that by taking responsibility for my life and my actions really pays off and it did, it has certainly changed the quality of my life. But as I am a human being as everyone else, I get stressed from time to time too.
I learned during this process that it is definitely beneficial to manage stressful situations instantaneously, without putting it off and procrastinating over it.
But how to do that if we feel very emotional, anxious and can’t even think clearly?
We need to be aware that even little problems can grow and take the form of chronic tension, stress and procrastination. The self-care routine and choices that we make for ourselves everyday such as healthy eating habits, exercising, creating some head space and inner calmness through meditation etc. really matter!
So what can we do if something unexpected happens suddenly and we loose our balance? Instead of getting stressed, anxious, angry, worried… try these few tips:
- STOP and bring some awareness into the moment. Take a step back from that situation and observe what is happening for a while. Don’t worry, it doesn’t mean that you neglect it, you will come back to it but with a different perspective.
- Rationalise it. Ask yourself a few questions. What are you worrying about? What is the worst that could happen? If that will happen how are you going to manage it? What other options do you have? Sit down and analyse your possible options and solutions.
- Relax, meditate and clear your mind. At the nearest time possible sit down to relax and clear your mind. You can use any technique that is familiar to you, whether it’s meditation, self-hypnosis, mindfulness or maybe any form of exercises. You can use an app like Calm or download a free relaxation recording from my website (link), they will guide you through the relaxation process.
- Do something that brings you joy. Go for a short walk, observe nature or have a cup of your favourite tea, depending on how much time you have. Do something you enjoy and that is beneficial to you at the same time (a bar of chocolate may not necessary be a good idea ;)).
All these steps take me 15 minutes in total, so there is no excuse, I am sure you can find a bit of time during the day. Be kind to yourself and remember that your wellbeing is your priority.
It will bring back balance and clarity in your mind. You will be much calmer and able to focus on your daily tasks with fresh energy.
I thought I would share that with you, because we all encounter these types of situations in our life. These few steps always help me to et the steam out, calm down and let go of these feelings. At the end of the day there is always a solution for every situation. And from the perspective of our life as a whole, most of these things don’t matter as much as we think.
I hope you will find it helpful.
